French President Emmanuel Macron with Trump & The US Congress
Following days of friendly handshakes and photo opportunities with President Trump in the spirit of"Vive notre amitié," (‘Long live our friendship’), Macron shifted his tone during his address to a joint session of Congress. Macron delivered a very thoughtful speech reflecting on years of French-USA collaboration, sharing ideals of democracy and freedom and also highlighting differences in four areas:
Trade wars: “Commercial war is not the proper answer. We need free and fair trade.”
Isolationism: “We can choose isolation, withdrawal, and nationalism … But closing the door to the world will not stop the evolution of the world.”
Iran deal: “There is an existing framework … to control the nuclear activity of Iran. We signed it at the initiative of the United States … That is why we cannot say we should get rid of it like that."
Paris climate accord: Macron said he believes France can “work to fulfill, with you [Congress], the ambitions of the global compact.”
Opinion: Western media outlets were quick to raise differences in policy between Macron and Trump but overall, after watching the full video, my assessment of the reception by Congress was very positive and buoyant - there were long rounds of warm applause (by Congress for Macron). Curious what you thought? - Ed: Kingi
